For over 100 years Gunns has been well known for showing a wide range of originals.

Rare collectable limited edition prints and originals by many award-winning artists including Peter Smith, Mackenzie Thorpe, Adam Barsby, Richard Pargeter, Govinder, John Horsewell and Janet Rogers. In one of its six display rooms it has an impressive selection of old prints dating from 1790 to the 1950s – advertising prints from the `50s are particularly popular – and in another a good selection of artists materials and cards.

The gallery was started by George Gunn in 1893 in a Victorian hotel built by the Jones brothers, who were also responsible for Lynton’s famous Cliff Railway.

Gunns Art Gallery was acquired by Peter Shimwell in 1993, who after more than 20 years of teaching in Hertfordshire, escaped the rat race to glorious North Devon, where he met his partner Angela. His experience of antiques fairs and craft markets persuaded him that the time had come for a lifestyle and career change, and he restocked the gallery with a wide selection of art.

Peter has renovated the building in the 15 years since he took over, and above the two floors of display space he has created two self-catering apartments that provide a comfortable and civilised base for exploring Exmoor.

Peter, Angela and dog Chloe take pride in their wide and ever changing selection and always welcome customers new and old.
