James SOWERBY was born in London in 1757. He studied at the Royal Academy. and set up as at portrait and flower painter. He later decided to concentrate on botanical research, which, of course, he illustrated himself.
His principal work, ENGLISH BOTANY, published with Sir James Edward SMITH MD FRS, appeared in 1790. Later editions with many additional engravings contained upwards of 2.500 prints, virtually all of which were coloured by hand at the time of publication. Further editions were published, even into the 20th Century, but from around 1860, these were most printed in colour, not hand coloured.
He had a large family, several of whom became botanical artists.
