A Day Painting with Roger Dellar - 17 August 2010

All Roger’s paints for this lesson were System 3 Thick Acrylics on a 16 x 12 canvas. Roger used a very limited palette of complementary colours – yellows and browns with pale blues and small splashes of red. He scumbled with a bristle brush, various earth colours, from yellow ochre to burnt umber, across the canvas, leaving gaps where the lightest lights would be. Where any particular colour dominated in one area, he echoed the colour around appropriate points using blocks of colour. A few dabs here and there of white with a spot of yellow produced the final highlights in the street scene, the cars and the people, turning the completed painting into a wonderful, impressionistic work of art.

We then worked from street scene photo's taken by Roger, using his methods and with his encouragement. Click on the picture of Roger for the results. A real treat

Dale has been taking successful courses in our Old Laundry Studio with a range of pictures including Beach Scenes, Exmoor Views and Landscapes for over 5 years. The image this time shows a group of cows grazing in the Mole valley. Dale will be bringing the image and will show step by step how it can be achieved.

All one day courses are held in our Old Laundry Studio in Lynton and are limited to 7 students.

We provide easals, canvas, paint, brushes and even tea and coffee. All you need to bring is a packed lunch.

Our aim is that all students will finish a piece of work in their day with us.

We start at 10am with coffee and introduction, have a short lunch break and finish at about 4pm
